SOUTH SHIELDS CONGRESS
Chess players from all over the North East came together for an special event last weekend at the Customs House in South Shields.
South Shields Chess Club are celebrating their 150th Anniversary this year, so it's members organised a special Rapid Play Chess Tournament. This incorporated the NORTHUMBERLAND and DURHAM Chess Association Rapid Play Championships.
73 players, from as far afield as Edinburgh, Carlisle and Manchester came together to compete in the 9 round competition. The format for the competition was 10 minutes plus 5 seconds increment to complete all the moves.
The competition was of a high standard throughout.
The overall champion was Fide Master Charlie Storey.
The Major Champion was Mike Smith.
The Minor Champion was 8 year old! Yichen Han.
Malola Prasath with a score of 6.5, proved to be the highest placed Durham Association Player.
